Posts:Well, the FP 1185 is the one I've had the most problems with>>> [May 06, 2006 - 09:34 PM] I'll contribute by answering in an indirect way-- The only watches I have ever had problems with were 1185-equipped Blancpain Flybacks. I have had two of them--a Monaco YS, and a Ti model. They were both purchsed new. The Monaco's minute register never advanced past the five minute mark. Thinking that I had a fluke bad experience, two years later I purchased a Ti flyback that had an even more ridiculous problem--the Mens Leather Flip Flops seconds hand was Creed Perfume mounted on the center arbor with enough friction such that with every reset to zero the seconds hand rotated more and more to the left of 12 o'clock. At the end of the first day, to my dismay, the center seconds hand would reset to the 10 o'clock postion! The FP 1185, while interesting in concept, is IMHO the least reliable chrono movement out there. One could argue that the problems I had were secondary to poor QC at BP (which I would not disagree with, BTW) but I think there are intrinsic problems to the movement as far as reliability and ruggedness. As evidence, the derivative Omega 33XX movements have had significant problems also. I had to chuckle when the first owner's reports emerged because not only did BP screw more customers indirectly, but this time it had caused shame to its older Swatch group sister. One might think that this was too small a sampling size for me to draw such a conclusion. I argue that it was two separate watches produced at different times (I bought my second Flyback two years later) yet both had problems. That's not unlike the random sampling that a company must use to ensure good QC. I will never be a Flyback purchaser again and I may never purchase a BP again. Search the archives and you will see a disproportionate number of posts questioning BP's overall reliablility. No other brand forum exhibits this amount of uncertainty; I'm sure that I am not the only previous owner that can give you insight as to why that might be the case. Regards, Isaac in Philly. Personal commentary follows... It seems that I'm not the only person who has a low opinion of the FP 1185, it's decendants and the work of F. Piguet in general. I wish Swatch Group would come to their senses and drop their FORCED shotgun marriage between Piguet and Omaga. What the heck was bad with the concept of Omega's sporting Lemania movments that worked, worked reliabily and were durable watches? Expensive Hanger Queen chronographs will likely prove to be as disasterous to Omega as the Quartz and Japanese onslaught of the late 1970's and early 1980's. Again, as Bas Van Dorp first advanced, the people behind the demise of the Lemania 5100 deserve to be the first peoples lined up agains the wall when the revolution comes. |

Texted Hoax Says Women Being Killed at Wal-Marts
Ad Age reports that a text message hoax is warning women they could be killed by Mexican gangs at Wal-Mart stores. The article says police are receiving lots of calls from people concerned about the hoax text messages.News reports from around the U.S. say police departments have been besieged by calls regarding the hoax texts, and Walmart has reached No. 5 on Twitter's list of trending topics. The text messages appear to be tailored to local conditions -- warning of gang activity in areas where gangs are active, but vaguer threats in areas, such as Walmart's home of Northwest Arkansas, where they aren't.Wal-Mart issued a statement that says safety and security of their customers is the retailer's top priority.
A text rumor making the rounds in New Mexico says three women are to be killed in an initiation rite for a Mexican gang. Texts in several areas say the police have issued a warning, which has been untrue in each case, according to reports. At press time, news reports had identified the hoax in at least 16 states, including Maryland, Delaware, Florida, North Carolina, Colorado, Texas, Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma, Missouri, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana and Hawaii.
"The safety and security of our customers and associates is our top priority. We are aware of the message being circulated and are working with local authorities to enhance our security efforts at our stores. While we take these types of situations seriously, we regard this as being only a rumor, much like similar rumors that have circulated via e-mail in previous years."Walmart is participating in tonight's midnight Twilight parties so the false text messages could potentially scare off customers and reduce turn-out. Fortunately, it looks like the message that these stories are false is getting out pretty quickly.

There are 21 European "New Approach" Directives against which a wide range of products are required to be CE marked against before they are "placed on the market" in Europe. When placing the CE mark on the product the manufacturer or "his authorised representative in the European union" Raylenelempke declaring that the product complies with all applicable directives. The list of 21 applicable directives can be found on the European Commission website. The EU Directives are not themselves law as they are all taken into the the law of each member state. Whilst the directive and standards may be harmonised across Europe manufacturers still need to be aware of country specific requirements in safety standards, permitted frequency bands and other areas that might affect their product.
Some directives requirements are more onerous than others, but a general guide is that a manufacturer must
- identify all directives applicable to their product
- assess their product against the requirements of a directive - usually through a combination of technical argument and testing. Testing can be done in house by the manufacturer or by 3rd party specialist test laboratories
- create a Technical File containing full details of the product and all assessments carried out to demonstrate compliance. This technical file becomes a living document and needs to be kept up-to-date as changes occur to the product or to the standards against which the product was assessed
- depending on the directive there is an optional or mandatory requirement to have the Technical File assessed by a Notified Body
- Draw up and sign a Declaration of Conformity and affix CE mark to the product and/or packaging

Chances are, when you think of sherry you think of little old ladies at the turn of the century, sitting in a drawing room sipping wine from small crystal glasses. Well, maybe those ladies knew something we've forgotten- sherry is a delightful, food friendly wine. Today, most sherries that are sold are commercial blends, which ensure consistency, but don't offer sought-after complexity. Fortunately, with the popularity of Spanish wines today, that is changing. Consumers are discovering a whole new world of sherries, from the dry, crisp Finos to the oh-so-sweet Pedro Ximnez wines. And, just like Champagne, sherry is only sherry if it comes from Jerez region of Spain.
With today's interest in food and wine pairings, sherry has become a star player - especially with tapas. Tapas are small plates of appetizers such as cold meats, sausage, olives and cheese. According to "The Joy of Cooking", the original tapas were slices of bread or meat which sherry drinkers in Andalusian taverns used to cover their glasses between sips to keep the flies off. Whatever the origin, the pairing of tapas with sherry is a perfect match. In fact, recent scientific studies have shown certain compounds in dry sherries actually accentuate the taste and flavors of certain foods such as cheese, meat, fish and mushrooms.
If you feel adventurous and want to begin enjoying sherries, start with a dry, light fino or Montilla. Serve it cold with proscuitto, salted, roasted almonds or green olives. A little more full-bodied Amontillado goes great with Stilton or Gruyere cheese or an Oloroso with goose liver pate or beef teriyaki.
Cream sherries, such as Harvey's Bristol Cream, are sweet dessert wines. Try dried fruit or custard to bring out the flavor. Serve the very sweet Pedro Ximenez at room temperature. The raisin-like flavor is great for dipping a biscotti to finish off a meal.
The good news is a good quality sherry won't break the bank. You can find a bottle of Don Fino for less than $12. Sandeman Amontillado Sherry Medium-Dry Character is a more full-bodied wine. Because a small amount of PX (Pedro Ximenez) is added late in the aging process, it has a touch of sweetness. Under $18.
To round out the sherry experience, try Osborne Sweet P.X. It has a nice brown sugar smell and taste. Great over vanilla ice cream or in a glass to linger over by the fireplace. The alcohol content is 17%, so sip it slowly. Under $20.

Now is one of the best times of the year to start your tomato plants. Why, well you want to give them the best start to life and tomatoes need a long growing season to produce a good crop. I can hear you saying, it is too cold or too wet to start my tomato plants in the ground. Yes, I agree for the Northern hemisphere but you need to start your plants off in very early spring to be sure that they are good croppers. This applies in both the North and South. It is just that Spring happens at different times in the year in different parts of the world.
You need to judge when to start your tomato plants and mine go in during January. These will be potted on into larger pots and eventually put into the growing area of a greenhouse in May. This is giving me about 4 months of growing before they go into their final planting position and I would expect to start cropping my harvest sometime during July, probably towards the beginning of July. I will also be able to keep these cropping until late October and this is a growing period of nearly 10 months.
First of all you need to identify the best seed for what you want to produce and there are many different types of tomatoes to choose from. The seed type will also affect when and where to plant your seeds.
There are 2 main types of tomatoes to choose from and these are indoor or outdoor tomatoes or a type which will grow indoors or outdoors. I grow both but start these off at different times of the year. You also need to look at whether to grow small, medium or large tomatoes. Small tomatoes are often known as cherry tomatoes and bushes are often weighed down with the number of tomatoes growing on their vines. I tend to grow these outside in my high density garden and there is nothing I like better than just eating one when out gardening. The other types of tomatoes are medium and large tomatoes. The large tomatoes are often called beefsteak and are great sliced on sandwiches.
So how best to grow them? Well I start these off in flats. As I do not need many tomato plants at as time, I use a quarter size flat, (or seed tray), and I fill these with a multi purpose compost. There are specialist seed composts, soil based composts and peat free composts. We should use peat free composts and for most things I do, but for sowing seeds I find a peat based compost is best. Press the compost down a little but not too much so it becomes hard and the seedling roots will develop better in a looser soil than a harder one. Once I have done this I sow the seeds on the surface of the compost. As I only need 6 of each type for the greenhouse I sow 10 seeds in 2 rows of five in a quarter size flat. Once I have done this I cover them with a thin layer of vermiculite. This is a useful product to cover seeds with as it is lightweight but retains moisture. Finally water the flat. I do this by placing the flat in small container of water and let the compost absorb the water. You can tell it has absorbed the water as the color of the vermiculite changes.
You then need to place the flat somewhere warm. I usually use a windowsill and put the flat inside another flat with a plastic cover over it to make a mini greenhouse. I often use a heat pad underneath this just to start things off and give the seeds the ideal conditions to germinate. As soon as there is any sign of germination remove them from the heat and grow on until large enough to pot into 3 inch pots.
I find that by starting my tomato seeds now, I get a better crop earlier in the year, and just as important, a heavier crop later on.

Capital Gains Tax Rates Headed Higher After 2008 Election?
Our oft reviled President Bush helped pass significant tax reduction bills in both 2001 and in 2003. The 2003 bill lowered the maximum tax rate on long term (capital assets held more than one year) from 20% to 15%. The maximum tax rate on corporate dividends was lowered even further from a maximum tax rate of 38.6% to 15%. Maximum tax rate on all income was lowered from 38.6% to 35%. Capital asset investors (stocks, bonds, real estate etc.) seem comfortable with the idea that the existing tax rates on dividends, capital gains and earned income will stick around until at least the end of 2010--their scheduled expiration date. The odds of that occurring are, at best, 50-50 at this point.
Tax policy can be structured to achieve one or more of these three goals:
- To provide government services to citizens;
- To direct capital expenditures within the economy;
- To redistribute wealth from those who have it to those who don't.
Democratic candidates for president have not disavowed the trial balloons by Democratic members of Congress to hike tax rates.
What this means
Investors can expect higher tax rates post-2008 should a Democrat become president. None of the Democratic candidates for president has articulated a private sector pro-growth tax policy. Instead, their orientation appears to be toward wealth redistribution via higher tax rates. During the recent debate between Democratic politicians, Obama indicated that he wanted to almost double the maximum tax rate on capital gains from 15% to 28%. Clinton has stated that her maximum tax rate on capital gains would be 20%. Both of these candidates have indicated a willingness to raise taxes on dividends and on income of other categories. The existing tax rates are history post-2008 should a Democrat win control of the White House in this fall's election. That message is clear from Democrats on the House Ways and Means Committee who have already released a plan to hike personal tax rates.
On the other side is McCain, who has recently stated his support for extending the present tax-rate structure past 2010. However, McCain voted "no" on both the 2001 and 2003 tax rate reduction bills. So realistically, the likelihood of the 15% dividend tax rate and capital-gains tax rate remaining past 2008 is perhaps less than 50-50 at this point.
The Danger
When Bill Clinton signed his big tax increase bill in 1993, the economy had been expanding for more than two years, and was able to power through the negative economic impact of the hikes. In 2009, the United States might be just emerging from a nasty downturn. Based on history, an increase in the capital gains tax would cause a net decrease in tax revenue at the very time when business needs to be stimulated! All candidates must take this into account when considering a tax increase.
Real Estate Investment Impact
Any increase in tax rate means more total dollars in the hands of government and less in the hands of the private sector. In general, this will mean increased challenges to holding onto your hard won wealth. What is your best strategy in this market? The Economy and Your Retirement
